Dead Island 2 Review – Zombie-Slaying Mayhem in the Sun

Visuals

The graphics in the game are solid, delivering the gritty, violent zombie-killing experience you’d expect. The visuals do their job in showcasing the brutality of the action, and the execution animations are particularly over-the-top, which is a nice touch for those looking for an exaggerated, gory spectacle. However, while the setting is strong, the overall look doesn’t push any boundaries or stand out as revolutionary.

Gameplay

At its core, the gameplay is about as basic as it gets for a zombie-killer. The combat feels simple, with a mechanic where you can perfect block large zombies, stunning them, while regular zombies are often a one-hit kill. It’s satisfying but quickly becomes repetitive due to the lack of challenge. The game’s main mechanic, blocking, can be abused so easily that any difficulty is quickly removed. Adding combos to the combat system would’ve gone a long way in making things more engaging, but unfortunately, that’s not the case here.

Throwables are on a cooldown instead of being a one-time use, which is a great feature to avoid constantly restocking. As for the Fury mode, it’s an uninspired enraged mechanic that’s been done to death in other games. While it gives you a temporary boost, it doesn’t bring anything new or exciting to the table and only makes the game easier. The abilities available offer some variety but remain overly simplistic and fail to add excitement to the combat. Also, the game suffers from too many QTEs, which bog down the flow of combat and make it feel even more mechanical than it already is.

Exploration and Level Design

The game is pretty linear, with boring and uninspired level design. There’s no real sense of exploration, and the environments often feel like a string of disconnected arenas rather than a cohesive world. The respawning enemies are another frustration, as they come back far too quickly, making exploration or searching for something a tedious task.

Co-op and Fun Factor

The game shines in its co-op mode, as is often the case with zombie games. It’s a great way to have some simple fun with a friend, offering the mindless zombie-slaying action you’d expect from the genre. While there’s nothing groundbreaking here, if you’re just looking for a good time with a buddy, the co-op is a solid experience.

Verdict
7.5 out of 10

The game offers some basic zombie-killing fun, but it doesn’t do anything new or exciting. The combat is simple and can be easily abused, and the level design is uninspired. The game becomes increasingly repetitive as you play, but the over-the-top executions and co-op mode are highlights, making it a fun choice for a short, casual gaming session with a friend. If you’re just looking for a straightforward zombie game, this one will do the job, but don’t expect anything you haven’t seen before.
